2014 Book Drive

We finished delivering all the books from this years book drive. Although we took it much slower this year with a lot less advertising we still managed to receive 631 books. Our goal was 500 this year, 100 books for each year Gabriel would be old. Without all our your help there is no way we could’ve accomplished this great service. So Thank You!!

The final number of books delivered and to which hospitals. 126 all NEW BOOKS to Portnuef Medical Center in Pocatello, Idaho, 100 Books to Riverton Hospital, 200 Books to American Fork Hospital, 100 Books to Timpanogos Hospital and 105 Books to Preston Idaho Hospital.

The below picture is a bit blurry but it was taken at the Riverton Hospital. We didn’t get pictures from the other Hospitals this year. Everyone is so busy we just got in and out.

Riverton.2014

I mentioned in an earlier post that next year we will only be accepting NEW BOOKS. Many hospitals can only take new books as donations because of the risk of infection. We have tried very hard to make sure all our donated books are cleaned but having new books is a better guarantee for no germs. So if you’d like to continue to help us with our book drive next year it may be a good idea to pick up a book here and there throughout the year so when next January comes you can donate a few books without worrying about buying a bunch all at once. That will be my plan so we can still donate to at least a few hospitals.

Thanks again so very much for all your amazing help. I will post any comments we receive from patients who receive one of our books. Those are my most favorite stories.

To Clarify

I just noticed that on every book we donated this year and probably last year as well says Gabriel’s Death year is 2012. That is incorrect and I’m not sure how that got past me. He died in 2010. I would’ve loved to have 2 more years with my sweet angel boy but that is not the case. So I just wanted to make a note of that to anyone who were to receive a book, come here and see that the dates differ. I hope we get some stories or comments from book recipients this year. I love hearing those stories so much.

First Book Delivery of 2014

On Friday 2/21/14 we drove to the Hospital in Pocatello and met with Anita Heany. A few days earlier when I had talked to Anita she had told me that the Hospital had a new policy that they could only accept new books. So maybe we should just wait until next year so we could prepare for that. Hearing that about crushed me. Since Gabriel was at Portnuef when he passed away and we have a relationship with those amazing nurses, that’s the most important place for me to donate books. So I sorted through all 500+ books again and found all the new books that had been donated(we actually had a lot this year). I found 126 new books to take to Pocatello. So anyway we met with Anita and visited a little bit took a few pictures, gave her several hugs and left the books in her hands. It always brings me so much joy to drop those books off. And they were so excited to accept them and so excited to give the books to just the right kids.

We’re excited to get our other hospital’s contacted and books delivered to them. I hope they all haven’t implemented the new book policy this year so we can deliver all our books.

Please know that if you collect books for us next year we will only be accepting NEW BOOKS ONLY! Because the hospital policies have been changing to control infection they can’t accept Like New books so we won’t be collecting them anymore. So please start collecting your new books now so when next year comes around you’ll have a few new books to donate to our local hospitals. We are so thankful for all your help and the children & parents of those children who receive these books are even more thankful!

MET OUR GOAL!!!!

Yay!! We met our goal by picking up 135 books from my friend Stacey in Lehi. I just want to say a HUGE Thank You to Stacey for bringing the books from Idaho and gathering some in her neighborhood. Also the books she brought from Idaho were donated by the Shelly Library and I wanted to say THANK YOU to them as well. We have never received so many NEW BOOKS from one place. They are all so greatly appreciated and we can’t wait to get them delivered!!

So our TOTAL number of books by today is:

547!!

Our goal was 100 books for each year celebrating Gabriel’s Birth!

SO CLOSE!!

Yesterday my mom, sister and I organized, cleaned and labeled the most recent books delivered to us. First of all thank you so much for all your support. We’ve had books delivered from all over the place.

When we finished getting all the books counted and put away our new total for this year is…  412!! We are still short 78 books to reach our 500 mark. I feel positive that we’ll make it because I have another fabulous friend who told me she will be giving us 100+ in the next week or two. Yay!! We’ll keep you posted on the total that we end up with and where they all go.

I would like to ask anyone who still has books for us to go ahead and bring them over our deadline this year isn’t until February 20th so we still have time. The only other question I ask is that you take care in only sending books that are “LIKE NEW” OR “NEW”. We have receive a lot of books that were just to worn out to give as a gift to a child in the Hospital.

With that said I wanted to explain a little how out book drive works. Our books are given to the staff over the pediatric floors or the hospital’s we choose. Those same books are then “GIVEN” not loaned to the children. These books are truly a Gift from Gabriel. They are to be sent home with children or siblings of children who are in the hospital. So when going through your books a good way to know if they are in good enough condition is to say “Would I feel comfortable wrapping this book up as a gift for a neighbor’s child’s Birthday?” Most of our books are in very good condition but there still have been about 100 that we couldn’t use. So please just be aware of that. Thank you so much and we love you all for such great support.

99 Books Closer to 500

This last week we received two large book donations. Thank you so for your donations. Between those two large donations and 5 new books from some neighborhood friends we now are up to 243.

We’re almost 1/2 way to our goal and we only have 9 days until Gabie’s 5th Birthday.

We will be collecting any books you have through the beginning of February if you don’t have a chance to get them to us before the 26th. Our plan is to take (hopefully) 250 to Portneuf Medical Center in Idaho on February 21st. We’d love to have 250 more that we can divide up between 2 local hospitals, so please please let me know if I can pick some up from you.

PLEASE HELP US MAKE OUR GOAL OF 500!!!

The Book Drive is Ongoing

Today I decided it was time to get the books that have been donated so far counted cleaned and labeled so I’m not overwhelmed as we get closer to Gabriel’s 5th Birthday.

We have 144 books donated so far. We usually have quite a lot more by this time but I haven’t pushed it as much as I usually do so I’m afraid people are thinking that we are not doing the book drive this year. I promise you we are, we just wanted to have it be a little bit more low key and less stressful. So since we are not pushing I think I’d like to set our Goal for 500 books this year. 100 Books for each Birthday Gabriel should have had by January 26, 2014.

The Monday before Christmas we heard a knock on our door and were surprised to see Madison’s 6th Grade teacher and her children at our door with a box of books. Mrs. Botelho had Madison share our Book Drive with her class and ask the classmates to participate in our annual book drive. So when she came to our house we were surprised to see her because we were only waiting on students to donate books. It turns out the Mrs. Botelho talked to some other teachers and asked them to also participate in our Book Drive. So the box she brought were 57 mostly new books donated to us from the teachers of Sage Hills Elementary. We greatly appreciate their donation and are so thankful to those who find value in helping with this service for as many children as we can reach.

Please remember to let Amy know if you have “new” or “like new” books that you’d like to donate to our Book Drive. You can call or text me at 208-251-1362 or email me at amy@savillefamily.org. You may also give your books to Gary and Colleen Saville in Pocatello or Debie Egley in Lava Hot Springs. We would greatly appreciate any help reaching our goal of 500 books.
